In Celtic myth the son of Cumhal or Camulos, a king of the Tuatha Dé Danann. As a child he was apprenticed to a magician of the same name who was fishing for the salmon of knowledge in the pool at the source of the Boyne or Boann. When the salmon was caught Finn burnt his thumb on it and on sucking it to ease the pain became possessed of all knowledge. The story of his betrothed Gráinne who eloped with Diarmait is told under those headings. He was the father of Ossian, and is also known as Fingal.
